lyrics

Last letter
Roger guitar and slide, Louis piano, Louis bass

You vanished off the face of the earth
I know I won’t ever see you again
I’ll never know what happened to you
just a pile of words is all that remains
that I can hardly bear to read, the stuff of lovers' notes.
And yet I’m holding in my hand the last letter you wrote

If you’d wanted you could have written to me
I was never going anywhere
I was living at home alone
Still thinking you may care
And in my dreams I’d see you in that hat and that old yellow coat
And I’m looking for a meaning in the last letter you wrote

I studied the words in your beautiful hand,
Tried reading between the lines
What was written was written
There was nothing there to find

Every day I check my mailbox
I know that I’ve been waiting in vain
Sometimes I’d put a pen to paper
but I don’t get much beyond writing down your name
If you’ smile for someone else what more is there to know?
And yet I am holding in my hand the last letter you wrote
